Wellington Hospital Connectivity Upgrade

Wellington Hospital is the main hospital in Wellington, New Zealand, located south of the city centre in the suburb of Newtown. It is the main hospital run by Capital & Coast District Health Board (C&CDHB), which serves Wellington City, Porirua and the Kapiti Coast District.

SOLUTION

The particular equipment was used as the office space was an isolated area, with relatively short cable distances to run. It was an industrial style office with multiple ceiling heights with various architectural features, such as exposed concrete from the slab above, drop-down ceilings, feature cable trays and vinyl imaging.

We chose this solution as it was achievable considering the space, and the limited timeframes.

The Mars panel antenna was chosen for its aesthetic slim line design, small and unobtrusive profile that blended easily with the office environment and available window space.

The Blackhawk Omni Ceiling Antenna provided the perfect solution for voice and data applications. Being ideal for repeater applications that require a 360° beamwidth for complete internal coverage.

The small scale Cel-Fi GO2 solution was used for the ability to boost dual bands concurrently supporting voice and mobile internet for multiple mobile devices.

This also kept the installation hardware costs down.

THE CHALLENGE

Originally commissioned in 1982, the Grace Neil Block (the Women’s Hospital) of the Wellington Hospital had recently undergone a renovation. The Blood and Cancer centre specialists were moved to a new area of the Block as a result of the new Children’s hospital construction. Medical staff, including senior doctors were relocated into a newly created office area that was situated in the old building, after several weeks of poor mobile coverage causing clinical risks to patients due to the inability to contact doctors it was acknowledged a connectivity solution was necessary.

Wellington Hospital Office Space

BENEFITS

The installation of the dual-carrier Cel-Fi GO2 system by Remote Networks solved the coverage issue in the newly furbished office area in the Grace Neil Block of the Wellington Hospital.

  • Enhanced productivity
  • Improved patient safety

The senior doctors are now able to use their phones in their new offices and surrounding areas eliminating the clinical risk to patients by having good quality cellular coverage.

INSTALLATION CHALLENGES

The project was undertaken in a live operational office of the hospital, it was essential to maintain a fairly quiet workplace, with the need to reduce dust and any obstructions. Good communication and flexibility were required by all parties to get the project completed.

Installation of antennas – Coaxial cable could not be run vertically as the office was based on Level 3 of 11, with each floor fire sealed.

There was sufficient 4G coverage by both Spark and Vodafone located at the office windows. The cable distance was also achievable, being only a 30m run from the window back to the repeater units.
