The Waterloo Metro Quarter Project is expected to commence in 2022 and will deliver residential, office and retail space, along with student accommodation, affordable housing and social housing.

Installation Challenges

The warehouse was constructed of concrete, brick and other materials that were not favourable for an RF signal to penetrate, let alone solid steel demountable offices.

An external mast could not be mounted on the roof, so the team had to get a custom-made mast for the facade of the building, which required an elevated working platform (EWP).

The Issue

Constructing a brand-new train station as part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project in one of the most densely populated suburbs in Sydney is not easy without connectivity.

The team working on the Waterloo Metro Quarter project, which involves the construction of a new metro station and the integrated station development (ISD) above it, were working from demountable offices within a nearby warehouse. With the construction of the warehouse and offices, there was insufficient signal available within the warehouse for the team to operate efficiently.

The Products

Telstra Cel-Fi GO stationary repeaters were installed to provide a uniform signal distribution to all the demountable offices. 

The Blackhawk Parabolic Grid antenna was selected as the external antenna for this project to isolate the best quality signal and overcome the dense “noisy” environment in the heart of Sydney. 

The Blackhawk Omni Ceiling antenna provided consistently distributed mobile phone service from the Cel-Fi repeater, with a 360° beam width for complete internal coverage. The antenna is compact with a visually unobtrusive design similar to a smoke alarm.

The Solution

The projects team went to the Waterloo site to do a site survey to obtain signal strength readings and capture photos of the facility. We then did a design, which provides a BOM (bill of materials) and plans for the contractors to follow. Our Technical Coordinator made sure we could provide full coverage in all the demountable sheds using Telstra Cel-Fi GO repeaters.

The Outcome

We had one of our trusted contractors carry out the installation which provided full coverage into the demountable sheds. The solution improved the signal strength to all the demountable offices located within the warehouse so that the team from John Holland could manage the project with the necessary connectivity solution.
