Indoor Air Quality Monitoring for Schools

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, having proper ventilation has become an increasingly important factor in preventing the spread of the virus. Higher levels of CO2 in a building are an indicator of poor ventilation which increases the risk of various health issues including the risk of virus transmission. The biggest contributor to ambient carbon dioxide (CO2) in an indoor space is people exhaling – the more occupants and the higher the intensity of activity occurring results in a much higher CO2 level.

CO2 is the primary indicator of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and high concentrations are a tell-tale sign that stale air is not being replaced quickly enough in relation to the occupancy levels of the room. Ventilation monitoring has traditionally been considered a difficult metric to monitor and maintain. The Milesight® Indoor Air Quality monitoring solution is catered to help improve building/room ventilation and protect occupants from a number of various negative health impacts, including the spread of Covid.

CHALLENGES

Schools at different educational stages may run into the same problem of creating safer indoor environments for students and teachers.

Kindergarten

Students tend to be more mobile throughout the day and much of the day is spent near or on the floor. Young students in these classrooms are also less likely to follow rules regarding face masks, hand hygiene and physical distancing. To encourage preventive behaviours, teachers can increase classroom ventilation.

Primary School and High School

The recommended ventilation should be provided to limit the concentration of carbon dioxide in all teaching and learning spaces. These heavily populated environments mean school students are exposed and vulnerable to air pollutants much more so than when outdoors. With prolonged exposure to high levels of CO2 the risk of catching COVID-19 is increased.

COVID-19 SOLUTION

The Milesight solution consists of hardware and software, including sensors, gateway, and cloud platform. Place a UG65 LoRaWAN® Gateway at the top of the building to set up a LoRaWAN® network, covering the whole school (up to a 2km radius in urban environments). Place AM100 ambience monitoring sensors in each room/segment to detect CO2 levels, have an easy to read display and traffic light system to advise users. Optionally connect a UC1114 LoRaWAN® controller to ventilator fans to turn on or off as required. The Milesight IoT Cloud offers remote monitoring, alert, and auto control.
