Porirua Connectivity Challenge

The connectivity issue has been with the Treatment Plant since it was first built.

There was marginal / no coverage outside the buildings, and this dropped away to nothing when inside the building. The site location was very isolated and is situated in a steep valley facing the coast. It is situated on the coastal side of Porirua City, where all the towers are designed for the city itself.

Installation Challenges

Health & Safety. Its an operational wastewater treatment plant, during a Covid-19 outbreak and for safety, everyone had to wear full masks/gloves/safety glasses.

The height of the building also proved a challenge as a 15m cherry picker was required to install the external antennas. Throughout the install, working trucks were dropping off excess waste to the site and we had to ensure we were visible, and the vehicles were coned off from the access way.

The coverage required two units in the main building, one unit in the staff room/office area, with the second inside the control room. There was no physical way of running cables from one end to the other, as it was right above the operational area, with an operational winch. The atmosphere was also corrosive to electronics, so we had to ensure that the placement of equipment was isolated from this area.

The Business Need

The customer had been dealing with the coverage issue for years since the site was first built. There had been some improvements over the years but was still not usable. The improvements caused more frustration as phones were picking up the occasional signal but it still wasn’t significant and would cut out easily.

Two main reasons for wanting the solution:

Health & Safety of staff: Staff operate throughout the building at different locations, but also the front gate – which is where the ultraviolet treatment sheds are located with a high risk attached to this work. If an accident happened there wasn’t the ability to make a quick phone call to emergency services.

Operational efficiency: With plant and machinery in use constantly, the control room is a very busy place. Staff were not able to be proactive and call technicians/service agents, as soon as the issue occurs. Lack of cellular signal simply slowed down this process and made the process of calling support labour intensive by leaving that particular worksite to call out via the landline.

The Business Benefit

The successful installation ensured staff on-site can now work more efficiently and remain in contact with the rest of their colleagues, even friends/family communication during lunch breaks etc. It also enhanced onsite health and safety and gave them the ability to communicate.

This installation has solved a major ongoing problem at this plant and was resolved in a matter of weeks by the Remote Networks Team (from initial site scope, through to design/quote/order of equipment, to installation. Installation was completed within
